Live Long, Eat Cretan

16 - 31 May 2017

The Mediterranean diet  has been inscribed since 2013 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, but the Cretans are proud of their particularities!

  • Experience the creation of traditional Cretan dishes as taught from a famous Cretan gastronomy chef, at Chania, on wonderful Crete.
  • Taste the excellent produce at the local wineries and cheese makers,
  • and Enjoying the marvels of history, culture and nature on the island of Crete.

The Cretan Diet - tasty and nutritious- ensures good health and long life, but it involves a set of skills, knowledge, rituals, symbols and traditions.  Learn all about them and engage in life with a deeper purpose!

Culture, history and geography have helped create a combination of foods and lifestyle which provides a unique diet that is highly nutritious, prolonging life and helping to prevent many of the modern diseases that shorten the lives of millions of people every year in the West.

Our Chef will help you create dreamy tastes of older times, using simple ingredients; quality local products of animal and plant origin bathed in the light of the sun, watered by the salinity of the sea and enduring the power of the winds of Aeolus, bought at the open air markets.

Back in the late 1950’s Ansel Keys, an American nutritionist, discovered that many Cretan men living in the mountain villages had a very low rate of heart disease and cancer and lived to a very ripe old age. Following a 15-year comparative study of the cardiac disease and cancer rate known as the “Seven-Country Study” the benefits of the Cretan Diet were ascertained and validated until today.

For the Greeks, and the Cretans, food is very closely connected with culture, and Cretans are fiercely proud of  it. Starting from the prehistoric era with a visit at the archaeological site of Knossos with its famous palace of King Minos, son of Europa and Zeus, home of the Minotaur’s Labyrinth, to the traditional songs and dances at local festivals, your experience at Chania, on the island of Crete, an incredible location at the Mediterranean, surrounded by beautiful landscapes, stunning beaches and dramatic mountains, will be unforgettable!
